This study analyzed how different aspects of motivation align with cognitive presence in online discussions among 19 graduate students. Using Epistemic Network Analysis, the researchers mapped these interactions and found that 'utility value'—the perceived usefulness of the task—strongly connected to the integration phase, where learners synthesize and connect ideas.
Design online discussion prompts that explicitly highlight real-world utility and ask learners to apply concepts to their own professional practice. Scaffold the integration phase of discussions by prompting students to connect theoretical models directly to practical, everyday problems they face.
